2013 Fantasy Football Gambles

Gamble: A player with both high potential and high risk. Players in this category are usually injury-prone, have a high probability for being suspended, or are approaching the end of their career. From our Fantasy Football Dictionary

We have classified the following 13 players as gambles for 2013. We will be updating this list throughout the pre-season.

Montee Ball RB DEN 23 R RB - #8
Update (8-28): No news is bad news for fantasy owners in the case of the Broncos backfield. Head coach John Fox remains non-committal to any of his three options as his starting RB. Ball remains the best bet followed by Ronnie Hillman. Knowshon Moreno might receive the most snaps early in the... Read More
Le'Veon Bell RB PIT 22 R RB - #10
UPDATE (10/21): The rookie is averaging 20 touches per game over his first three NFL contests. Bel is averaging just 61 yards per game but now is the time to buy low as he's faced back to back difficult matchups (NY Jets and Baltimore). In week eight, Bell should produce solid RB2 numbers against Oakland. He's a three-down back that dominates goal-... Read More
Bryce Brown RB BUF 23 1 RB - #45
What we learned about Brown during his rookie season: the 6-foot-0, 225-pounder is all instincts, no fundamentals. During a two-week stretch with LeSean McCoy out of the lineup, Brown was the talk of the NFL after rushing for 347 yards and four touchdowns. Then over the final games, his touches dipped, the yards decreased and the fumbling just couldn't be stopped. ... Read More
Michael Bush RB FA 30 6 Unranked
Bush is the guy for goal line carries and third down. His downhill running makes him appealing, but last season the TDs were not as expected and he was injured late in the season. I expect we will see Bush in his back-up role again this season, but he is a gamble if you are counting on TDs making him fantasy-worthy.

Mike Gillislee RB MIA 23 R Unranked
If there's one thing we can count on in Miami, it is that their backfield will be a mess this season. With Reggie Bush signing in Detroit, the Dolphins were left with a lot of nothing in the backfield. For that reason they selected Gillislee in the fifth round in hopes he can help stop the bleeding. As a rookie it will take some time for Mike to adjust to the pace... Read More
Kendall Hunter RB SF 25 2 Unranked
Updated (8-26): Three rushes for 13 yards doesn't sound like much; It isn't. But it's how Hunter, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last season, looked physically during his preseason debut that matters. Apparently he looked "sharp" enough to recla... Read More
Fred Jackson RB BUF 33 7 RB - #57
Now 32 years old, Fred Jackson has finished each of the last two seasons with dehabilitating leg injuries and missed 12 games in total. Although he was formerly ahead of RB C.J. Spiller on the depth chart at the start of each of the last two years, that is no longer the case. Jackson will likely take on a change-of-pace role and at best, will poach a few short-yard... Felix Jones RB FA 27 5 Unranked
Update 9/1: RB Jonathan Dwyer has been released from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Apparently, the coaching staff feels that the trio of Redman, Stevens-Howling and newly acquired Felix Jones better suit their offensive stretch ground attack. Felix Jones is the interesting name to watch here. He looked decent in the limited work we saw in the preseason and has a chance ... Read More
Christine Michael RB SEA 23 R RB - #53
Michael's power and raw ability paint a bright picture of his NFL future; concerns about his character paint a much cloudier one. He'll need to grown up fast in Seattle and avoid the off-field issues that plagued him during college. If he can do that, he has the potential to push for regular playing time as early as this season (with the added prospect of earning a... Read More
Isaac Redman RB FA 29 4 Unranked
Update (10/22): The Steelers released Redman who had just 11 carries for 13 yards this season and was a healthy scratch since Week 4. Felix Jones and Jon Dwyer will serve as the primary backups behind Le'Veon Bell.

Update (9/1): RB Jonathan Dwyer has been released from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Apparently, the coaching staf... Read More

Denard Robinson RB JAX 23 R RB - #61
Receiver, running back , maybe even Quarterback? Who knows where Denard Robinson will line up, but no matter where it is, it won't be somewhere that makes him worthy of a fantasy roster. Is it possible he has some good games - sure, but no one will be able to know when that is and it definitely won't be on a consistent basis. Avoid the hype, let someone else draft ... Read More
Daniel Thomas RB MIA 26 2 Unranked
Update (10/21): Neither Miller not Thomas has performed overly well this season. Neither back has rushed for more than 70 yards this season and both backs have rushed for 2 touchdowns through the first 6 games. Clearly the hot hand will see the majority of carries week to week. Don't count on either back for much unless the match up is right.

DeAngelo Williams RB CAR 31 7 RB - #34
It seems every season DeAngelo Williams will put together one fantastic game that injects a tiny amount of hope back into the fantasy community. This spurs a handful of owners to believe that someone in the Panthers' backfield can be relied upon to tote the rock. Wise fantasy owners should know better though. Williams rushed for a paltry 737 yards on 173 carries. 2... Read More
