Week 4: Game Time Decisions - Injury Update
A week after suffering a concussion, the 32-year-old WR was knocked out of the week three loss to Baltimore in the 3rd quarter after suffering a shin bruise. He missed Wednesday's practice, but is expected to suit up for a very difficult showdown with shutdown CB Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks. On the season Johnson has amassed 25 catches for 258 yards, but has yet to reach the end zone. His fantasy owners are well aware of his allergy for crossing into pay dirt after he scored just six times over the past two seasons. Rookie WR Deandre Hopkins and TE Owen Daniels would see an increase in week four value if AJ is unable to give it a go, but neither are recommended options against a Seattle defense allowing the fewest fantasy points to opposing WRs (13 fantasy PPG) and third fewest fantasy PPG to tight ends through the first three weeks.
VD was inactive in week 3 and the 49er offense floundered in a surprising 27-7 home loss to Indianapolis. His hamstring injury appears to have improved as Davis was able to complete limited practice on Tuesday, giving him a chance to return on a short week for the matchup in St Louis. The 29-year-old tight end from the University of Maryland hadn't missed a game since 2007 before he was forced to miss this past week's loss. In two games against the Rams last season, Davis struggled totaling just six catches for 45 yards and no touchdowns. With Michael Crabtree sidelined this year, Davis emerged as a bigger factor in the passing game - totaling nine catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns during the first two weeks. He currently ranks as our #5 tight end for week 4.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Rob Gronkowski has a 60-40 chance of making his debut for the Sunday night game in Atlanta. Following offseason back and multiple arms surgeries, the Gronk missed the first three games and Tom Brady has struggled without his red zone monster (just five touchdowns through three weeks after averaging 36 touchdowns per season over the past three seasons). Gronk missed five games last season, but had been a red zone monster during his first three season totaling 38 touchdowns. Zach Sudfeld has been a non-factor in Gronk's absence as he's yet to a catch pass this season. Starting Gronk this week is risky due to the Sunday night start time against Atlanta as his owners won't have many alternatives with Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez already owned. The Monday night game this week features New Orleans (Jimmy Graham) against Miami so adding the Dolphins Charles Clay might be the only insurance option available. The Falcons defense is allowing the 12th most fantasy PPG to opposing TEs through three games.Injury Status: Injured Reserve
