Dynasty Radar: Who is IND TE Erik Swoope?

Our analysts are always looking for the next big thing in fantasy

Who is Erik Swoope? This is the same question everybody asked about Antonio Gates when the San Diego Chargers signed the 6'4, 255 pound power forward from Kent State. Swoope stands 6'5, 225 pounds, and despite not playing a down of football, garnered attention from NFL scouts because of his freakish athleticism and leadership skills. He is a bit undersized, but he lost over 20 lbs. before his senior season at The University of Miami. His football playing weight is expected to be between 240-255 lbs. He follows in the footsteps of Miami alumni Jimmy Graham who played power forward at The U before joining the football team his 5th year. In 2013 the 4 most productive tight ends in the NFL all had basketball backgrounds. Other NFL tight ends that predominately played basketball ball during their college careers include Julius Thomas, Tony Gonzalez, and Jordan Cameron to name a few. Also another player that was signed out of college to Swoope's current team the Indianapolis Colts, Marcus Pollard was highly productive with no college football experience, and one of Peyton's favorite big targets. Swoope has been reported as picking up the game extremely fast even before signing with the Colts. Other teams including the Denver Broncos also expressed interest in signing Swoope.

Fantasy Analysis:

He still has a lot of learning to do, and I wouldn't expect much productivity or even playing time this season with Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen on the roster. That's if the Colts even have room on their crowded roster at tight end. However he will make a team, and he will have long term value. He has the potential to be just as good as any of the other tight ends mentioned in this article. He's 6'5, runs a 4.65 40, and can jump out of the gym. Imagine if you drafted Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham before their rookie season. It would be the steal of your draft!
