Doesn't it seem like every year the New England Patriots have a ton of picks in the NFL Draft?? Once again this year the Patriots will be the team to deal with during draft weekend because they own 2 picks in both the First and Second Rounds. It may be getting a little tiresome to always mention the Patriots as one of the elite teams, but when they have top picks early in the draft and a great system, what else can you expect?
They Patriots do not have a lot to worry about as far as Free Agency goes. Wes Welker is an elite player, but nobody expects him to leave for another team. Tom Brady and Wes Welker like each other too much, and Wes will be a rich man very soon by signing to stay in New England. BenJarvus Green-Ellis is a free agent and will likely go somewhere else, but the Patriots drafted 2 Running Backs last year in Shane Vareen and Stevan Ridley . They like the potenial of both of them and will let Green-Ellis depart.
The biggest needs for New England are another Wide Receiver who can stretch the field and help with the Pass Defense. The first need might have been answered when they brought back Josh McDaniels into the coaching ranks. Brandon Lloyd is a Free Agent and has stated that he would follow Josh McDaniels wherever he went. It sounds like Tom Brady may have another weapon to throw to. A lineup of Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Rob Gronkowski , & Aaron Hernandez would be a nightmare for any Defensive Coordinator to try and game-plan for. If for some reason Brandon Lloyd does not follow McDaniels to New England, the Wide Receiver position is very deep in this year's draft and 1 or 2 could be drafted early to make certain that the defense would have to be spread out to try and stop the Patriots, which Tom Brady would then feast on.
Many teams had to throw to keep up with the Patriots' scoring this year and the Pass Rush and Cornerback play are in need of an upgrade. The defensive line as a whole are getting up in age and a youth-movement could really help out this unit. The fresh legs of younger players and a speed rush could excite the defense and create opportunities. The defensive secondary may already have an answer in house with the return of Ras-I Dowling. Cornerback is also very deep in this draft class and it would not shock anybody if 2 defensive players are taken in the first 2 rounds.
Bill Belichick is a mad genius when it comes to the draft. With the amount of picks that the Patriots have I could also see them trying to maneuver up in the draft for a higher profile player and really help out this team. If a team picking in the 3-8 spots (Minnesota, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Washington, & Jacksonville) is willing to trade to acquire more picks, wouldn't New England be a logical team to trade with?? That trade would give New England a great chance of drafting the top Wide Receiver (Justin Blackmon) or the top Cornerback (Morris Claiborne). I could also see several Free Agents signing with the Patriots to have a possibility of a Super Bowl ring. This year's Free Agent class is very strong in all of the areas that are of need for them. If you were a player, would you take a slightly smaller paycheck if you had a better chance to be a World Champion?
