Johnny Manziel is the headliner once again. He opened up practice as the starter for the first time this Monday. Perhaps reports of Brian Hoyer being a near lock to start were premature. Hoyer did however start the Browns' first preseason game. ... Andy Dalton got paid this week. In somewhat of a surprise move, the Bengals signed Dalton to a six-year, $96 million extension. It's less surprising if you look deeper in to the contract. The contract is more of a two-year commitment, then it becomes a year-to-year deal. ... E.J. Manuel has been struggling in camp, and it showed during the HOF game. The Bills have to be hoping he turns this around quickly. ... Tom Brady sat out the Pats first preseason game. There is nothing to read in to with this move. Brady just isn't a guy that needs to play four preseason games. ... Troubling news out of Carolina, Cam Newton is still experiencing sharp pains in his ankle. For Newton owners and Panther fans, this has to be a major concern. ... Saints superstar QB Drew Brees missed practice all week with a strained oblique. He warmed up Friday night but was not able to participate in the team's first preseason game. ... Ryan Tannehill looked very good in limited action during the Dolphins' preseason opener. He went six for six, for 62 yards. He ended a very impressive drive with a six yard TD pass to WR Brandon Gibson. Gibson is competing for the WR3 spot on the Dolphins depth chart.
On a somber note, Giants RB David Wilson's career has come to an end. The 23-year-old suffered a setback to his neck injury and cannot continue playing in the NFL any longer. Giants' rookie Andre Williams looked excellent in the HOF game. He totaled 48 yards on seven carries and a TD. Expect his ADP to have an immediate jolt. ... There's a lot to be concerned about with Arian Foster. He was once again out of practice this week, with what is assumed to be a lingering hamstring injury. He will miss the Texans first preseason game. Reports have also surfaced that he seriously considered retiring this offseason. This is more concerning with him than it would with most players. Foster is a different kind of guy, he seems like he could have a little Ricky Williams in him. ... Broncos' RB Montee Ball had an appendectomy this week and is expected to be ready to go by week one. Ronnie Hillman will be starting this preseason in his absence. ... Injured RB Kendall Hunter has been waived by the 49ers after tearing his ACL in camp. ... Toby Gerhart missed time this week with a hip flexor issue. This is reported to be head coach Gus Bradley just being "extra cautious". ... In a move that will drive fantasy owners absolutely insane, Titans RB Shonn Greene has been named the RB1 on Tennessee's first official depth chart. Dexter McCluster is listed as the RB2 and rookie Bishop Sankey is currently the RB3. Don't overreact to this announcement, there's still a long way to go. ... Dolphins' big free agent acquisition Knowshon Moreno was taken off the PUP list this week and is back at practice. ... Rex Ryan reiterated this week that the Jets will use a RBBC. With that being said, Chris Ivory left Thursday night's preseason game with an apparent rib injury. ... Le'Veon Bell is 10 pounds lighter this season than he was last season. He says he feels like he's quicker and moves better. ... Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor has been named the RB2 as expected. ... Bengals rookie Jeremy Hill has a legitimate shot to receive 10-15 carries a game this season. He has already surpassed BenJarvus Green-Ellis as the primary backup to Giovani Bernard. ... Frank Gore sat out Thursday night's preseason game. In his place, rookie Carlos Hyde carried the ball five times for 39 yards and looked pretty impressive doing it. ... Broncos RB3 C.J. Anderson suffered a concussion during the Broncos first preseason game. ... Patriots rookie James White struggled in his first NFL action. White is being viewed as a sleeper by many fantasy owners this season. On the other hand, Redskins rookie Lache Seastrunk looked excellent carrying the ball.
In Indy, T.Y. Hilton is "clearly" the WR1. Veteran Reggie Wayne is the WR2 and Hakeem Nicks is the WR3. ... Second-year WR Marlon Brown has been very impressive in Ravens camp. ... Bears young WR Marquess Wilson suffered a broken collarbone. He will most likely miss at least two months. ... Dolphins' rookie WR Jarvis Landry has been tremendous in Dolphins camp. He has a real shot to flourish as the Dolphins RB3 (If he wins the job). ... Julio Jones is returning to form and is practicing every other day. He may or may not play in the Falcons first preseason game. ... Josh Gordon and the Browns are still waiting to hear the results of Gordon's suspension appeal. ... Giants WR Odell Beckham is almost back to full strength. He is getting very close and should be back on the field sooner than later. His teammate Rueben Randle has been very impressive in the meantime. ... DeSean Jackson injured his ankle/foot this week and is expected to miss some time. It is not too significant but something to monitor. Pierre Garcon is also still sidelined with a tweaked hammy. ... Jarrett Boykin has been dropping way too many passes in camp and will need to fix this soon if he wants to be a major contributor in Green Bay. Randle Cobb has failed to impress in camp as well. Reports have been so bad that there has been speculation, on the Scout Premium Forums, of his ADP taking a significant drop.
Giants' freakishly athletic TE prospect Adrien Robinson was relegated to third-string duties during the HOF game. The gifted phenom is still a very raw talent. Larry Donnell and Daniel Fells split first team reps. ... Packers' undrafted rookie Colt Lyerla sprained his knee this week and is expected to miss multiple weeks. ... Martellus Bennett was suspended and fined for conduct detrimental to the team after slamming first-round CB Kyle Fuller to the ground during practice. ... Zach Ertz has looked great in the red zone and could lead the Eagles in TDs this season. ... Cardinals TE Jake Ballard announced his retirement this week. He tore his ACL in 2011, and has never really been the same since. ... Chiefs "redshirt" rookie Travis Kelce (missed last season with a knee injury) showed excellent speed on Thursday night as he broke away on a 69-yard TD.
