When the Chicago Bears signed wide receiver Roy Williams about a week ago, it was assumed that he would vie for a spot in the starting lineup, but it wouldn't really affect Johnny Knox . However, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, Knox's starting job at split end is indeed up for grabs. With Devin Hester as the flanker and Earl Bennett locked into the slot, it will be Williams going up against Knox. "We need a position battle," Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake told the Sun-Times. "Roy isn't going to be handed anything. He's got to earn his stripes, and Johnny's got to improve from where he's at."
While Williams has been a massive disappointing since leaving Detroit, Knox was Chicago's best wideout last season. He led the team in receiving yards by about 400 and tied for the lead in receptions and touchdowns. And the Bears are flirting with putting him on the bench for Roy Williams?! I don't mind Williams getting a lot of field time, but it should be at the expense of Bennett and/or Hester. I have to think the Bears' coaches will do the right thing in the end. Knox is a fringe WR2 or a solid WR3 in fantasy. But I wouldn't blame you if you shied away from him in drafts until we hear something different (read: less insane) about Knox's role on the Bears.
