QB Carson Palmer has been traded to the Oakland Raiders from the Cincinnati Bengals for a 2012 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2013 draft pick that could be escalated into a first-round pick. Palmer had threatened retirement after refusing to play for Cincinnati during this 2011 season. The emergence of rookie quarterback Andy Dalton along with the injury to Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell created a perfect storm to get a deal done.
Oakland probably gave up too much but that's what everyone said when they traded for the "washed-up" Richard Seymour. The bottom line is the Raiders' time is right now. The AFC West is a two-team race between Oakland and San Diego. Without Campbell, this team is in serious trouble. The problem is what happens when Campbell returns? Either way, Palmer hasn't been all that great in recent years which is what makes this deal seem excessive.
