Coming off of an historic 2011 season, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has signed a contract that sets its own piece of history. Gronkowski agreed to a six-year contract extension Friday worth up to $54 million in new money, which gives Gronkowski the richest deal for a tight end in NFL history. It includes an $8 million signing bonus. Since he is already under contract through the 2013 season, Gronkowski will remain a Patriot through 2019 if he plays out the entire extension.
Gronkowski scored 18 total touchdowns, 17 receiving, last year -- both NFL records for tight ends. He caught 90 passes and ended up with 1,327 receiving yards.
Gronk was absolutely brilliant last season. But you won't see me paying for 2011 stats. If someone wants to take him in the second-round of a 12-team draft, be my guest. I just don't see how he can pull off a repeat. Plus, tight end is so deep with talent yet again this season, the value move is to wait, wait, wait.
