San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates will both sit for Friday's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Chargers still have two preseason games remaining and head coach Norv Turner expressed an interest in seeing backup QB Charlie Whitehurst play with the starters. "Charlie is going to start, and I'm anxious to watch him in a starting role. It's something we may be in the position during the regular season that we have to do that, and it's a good experience for him."
It's worth noting that San Diego's offensive line will be without three starters so this is likely a precaution in order to avoid Rivers getting beat up unnecessarily. Gates on the other hand is reportedly "as healthy as he's ever been" and who doesn't love a little preseason hyperbole? In truth, Gates has looked very good and should be a key focal point to this offense. Rivers hasn't played during the final preseason game during Turner's tenure as head coach so he may not play the next game as well.
