Every single reporter in the St. Louis area has expected Rams running back Steven Jackson to void the final year of his contract and become a free agent for some time now. On Feb. 17, we heard that Jackson becoming a free agent was "almost universally expected" inside the organization. Now, we have confirmation. Or rather, something as close to confirmation as possible before free agency begins March 12. Such a move can't be made official until that date.
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote Monday that Jackson "will" void his contract and see what offers await him on the market.
When Jackson's decision does become official March 12, it won't really be news, but I'll write something about it. It's the right business decision for Jackson, who will be a free agent for the first time in his career. He doesn't risk anything by testing the waters, and the Rams will put a lot of effort into re-signing their all-time leader in rushing yards. I think Jackson will end up as a Ram for life.
