The Cardinals already have Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams on the roster, and they will probably add a running back through the draft or free agency. No matter what Arizona's backfield looks like in 2013, head coach Bruce Arians wants one player he can depend on ... a lot.
"Backs by committee, one of them gets hurt, you've lost half your committee or a third of your committee," Arians told the Cardinals' official website. "I like guys who can play every down."
Doesn't every coach? But some teams aren't afforded that luxury. In his past as an offensive coordinator, there have been seasons when Arians leaned upon the likes of Rashard Mendenhall and Willie Parker. Vick Ballard became a workhorse RB for the Colts during the tail end of last season.
Ryan Williams is the closest thing the Cardinals have to a three-down back, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He has played in just five games in his first two years, so how can they trust him with 300+ touches? I don't think Arians will have what he desires in a running back next season. The Cardinals will likely be employing some sort of committee.
