Chargers bring back RB Ronnie Brown

The Chargers added to their stable of running backs on Friday by re-signing Ronnie Brown. This comes on the heels of their acquisition of Danny Woodhead @danny__woodhead. Like Woodhead, Brown was used mostly on third downs last season. He had just 46 carries, but he had 49 receptions and gained 591 yards from scrimmage.

Fantasy Analysis:

When Ryan Mathews @rmathews24 drafted in 2010, the Chargers saw him as a true three-down back. And he had the skills to be such a player. Mathews was well built at six foot, 225 pounds; he could run inside and outside, and could catch very well. Three years, numerous injuries and many crushing fumbles later, it's clear that the Chargers want to see no part of him on third downs. With the inclusion of Brown and Woodhead, Mathews will get touches only on first and second downs. Of course, his overwhelming fragility is what causes most fantasy owners to stay away, but now we have another big reason. I think Mathews is barely a top-25 RB right now, and I wouldn't have a problem with people ranking him lower.
