The Lions are in need of a kicker following Jason Hanson's retirement, and apparently signing David Akers wasn't enough. So they have signed the most popular kicker on the Internet.
The team signed Havard Rugland on Friday. The 28-year-old Norwegian native gained a small measure of fame through his trick-shot video on YouTube titled "Kickalicious." The four-minute clip has more than three million views since being uploaded in September and shows Rugland kicking a ball tossed up in the air through uprights, making field goals from impossible angles and from as far as 60 yards away.
Rugland has no American football experience. He used to be an amateur soccer player.
The fact that Rugland can kick two balls and make them collide in air is great, but it's not what drew the Lions' interest. That video, which you can see in the link below, shows Rugland displaying great leg strength and accuracy. If you can kick it 60-plus yards and keep it straight, you might have a chance in the NFL. Former NFL kicker Michael Husted has been training Rugland for his NFL tryouts, and he compares his pupil to Sebastian Janikowski. Rugland is also 6 foot 2, 245 pounds. Even if Rugland's American football career ends in the next few months, it's a fun story.
Fantasy value? Well, he's gotta make the team first.
