During a conference call with season-ticket holding fans, San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco had many positive and optimistic things to say about running back Ryan Mathews . "A great kid" who "works extremely hard" and "big things" are expected from him. Telesco also added that they upgraded their offensive line in order to benefit both Mathews and the recently acquired Danny Woodhead .
A GM likes his running back. A real shocker, right? Well the question is, do they have any other choice in the matter? San Diego has four other backs on the roster right now, excluding Woodhead who is a change-of-pace, jack of all trades, third down receiver out of the backfield. None of those four other backs either has it in the tank to be a full-time guy (Ronnie Brown) or proven anything on the field (Edwin Baker, Fozzy Whittaker and Michael Hill). The Chargers have to find a guy who can at least outplay Brown to take some pressure off of Mathews. Most fantasy owners have cooled tremendously on Mathews, especially if they happened to draft him in the second round last season. Ouch.
