With Jets owner Woody Johnson telling the NFL Network that Mark Sanchez will compete for the starting job, NFL.com's Kimberly Jones reports one NFL executive predicts David Garrard will be New York's Week 1 starter. Rookie Geno Smith is also in the QB battle.
Imagine the New York tabloids should this scenario play out. Hard imagining it happening, however, as long as Sanchez remains on the roster. Garrard is 35, hasn't played in a regular season game since 2010 and has dealt with significant knee and back injuries. Always underrated even when a viable starter in Jacksonville, but let's see what Garrard can do before predicting he takes over as starter. Oh, even if he does, fantasy owners should not contemplate such a move. We'll give Smith the second best odds to start after Sanchez, though said odds are not very high. None of this is because Sanchez is all that awesome, but rather because he gets paid like he is.
