Chargers head coach Mike McCoy told SI.com's Peter King that he anticipates rookie Manti Te'o to start inside as the team's "Mike" linebacker next to veteran Donald Butler. "Our plan is for him to play three downs, and when we scouted him, we believed that's what he'd be,'' McCoy said. Interesting to note that Teo's first true exposure to the team's veterans comes on Monday.
Tremendous instincts led to Te'o generating major production on the college level, but one on-the-field concern centered on his speed and in turn his ability to pass defend. Unless there is a significant change in this area or with his suspect athleticism in general, it might be tough for the Chargers to leave a rookie on the field fior every play. Should that happen, the tackling ILB would be a sneaky IDP play especially.
