Raiders HC Dennis Allen anoints QB Matt Flynn, praises rookie RB Latavius Murray

Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that Matt Flynn is "our starting quarterback as we go forward right now and until the competition dictates otherwise, that's where we're going." Rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson @Tyler_Wilson8 has drawn rave reviews in practice, but considering the Raiders signed Flynn to a contract worth more than $5 million per season last month, he is obviously the favorite to start in Week 1 at Indianapolis.
Allen isn't one to pump up rookies too often, but he has taken a liking to rookie running back Latavius Murray @LataviusM
"Probably the thing that's been most impressive is that he's picked up everything offensively from a schematic standpoint, assignment wise," Allen said of Murray, via the Contra Costa Times. "He's done a great job. He's done a nice job in pass protection. That's one of the things you see with young backs that they struggle with at times."

Fantasy Analysis:

The Raiders are still pretty thin at WR, so Flynn, even with some job security, is probably a QB3 in 12-team leagues. In case you were wondering, Terrelle Pryor @TerrellePryor hasn't made enough progress as a passer to be thought of a starting QB.
Murray is a player I love, and not just because he went to my alma mater. He is big and fast -- 6-foot-3, 223 pounds and ran a 4.38-40 at his pro day -- and he runs hard. Plus, he can help out in the passing game. He was totally underutilized at UCF, spending most of his time as part of a timeshare with much less impressive runners such as Brynn Harvey and Ronnie Weaver. I think the Raiders see how talented Murray is, and he could very well be Darren McFadden's handcuff, surpassing Rashad Jennings @RashadJennings, by September. That means he should be starting by October, right?

Murray wasn't competing with the "unimpressive" Harvey and Weaver. He was competing with espn150 2010 #22 Storm Johnson. Murray made Johnson look pedestrian. All I can remember doing was saying "Storm, why don't you run like Latavius, the blocking is the same and you are the top recruit".

That being said Murray is one of the most frustrating players to root for. The ACL tear 2 years ago is never a good thing. The fact that he got busted up game one against Akron last year and has an undisclosed foot issue should be red flags.

The guy has all the talent, but unless you have Run DMC and no viable options but a handcuff or a keeper league, he shouldn't come off the board. I am a huge fan of college....but until they make him an H back and put him on the field with McFadden and let him catch some passes he won't be a viable option.

I'm talking about before Johnson got to UCF. In 2010, Weaver still got way too much work. Of course, we don't know what he will do at this level, and I'm being a little facetious when talking about him starting by October. He probably won't be drafted in most leagues, and that's fine. But people shouldn't forget about him after the draft.
