It's the unsubstantiated belief of one NFL insider, but at this point, I'll take any evidence that the Giants and wide receiver Victor Cruz are closing in on a contract. ESPN's Chris Mortensen said during Tuesday's edition of "NFL32" that he would be "shocked" if the two sides didn't reach an agreement on a long-term deal before the start of next month's training camp. Mortensen then got specific, saying that he thinks that deal could come within "the next 10 days."
I don't have a link to the sound bite, but believe me: That's what Mort said. As I've said before, I won't downgrade Cruz until we are well into August, he is still without a contract and is holding out of camp. But reaching a resolution sooner rather than later sure would be nice, if I may cast an understatement. A difference in guaranteed money is reportedly creating the distance between the two sides. As of now, Cruz is a low-end WR1 or high-end WR2.
