We don't know which 49ers wide receiver will step up this season in place of Michael Crabtree. Heck, the 49ers don't know which 49ers wide receiver will step up this season in place of Michael Crabtree. It's a largely unproven group surrounding veteran Anquan Boldin, and each member of that group wants to make a name for himself. But if San Francisco is looking at its best receivers regardless of position, tight end Vernon Davis is probably at the top of the list. Perhaps he will moonlight as a wide receiver this year.
"If the coaches want to line me up there, we'll see," Davis said Tuesday to NFL.com's Jeff Darlington. "... I'll do whatever the coaches ask me to do. If statistics come, it's cool."
Davis is going to be depended upon heavily to pick up much of the slack with Crabtree rehabbing a torn Achilles tendon. I expect him to be the focal point of the passing game, and I am not concerned about the lack of chemistry that was shown between him and Colin Kaepernick late in the season. Instead, the two generated a better connection in the playoffs, and I expect that to carry over. I am so confident in Davis this year, I have him ranked No. 4 among fantasy tight ends, behind only Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez, and Rob Gronkowski.
