Early Monday morning a report surfaced from Examiner.com that Chargers running back Ryan Mathews had been arrested for his alleged involvement in a bar fight. Immediately that led to speculation and hang ringing from the fantasy community already down on the oft-injured RB. Well, it turns out that reporting is false, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Ryan Mathews was not arrested Sunday night, San Diego police said Monday morning, contrary to a report alleging the Chargers running back's involvement in a fight outside a San Diego night club. The officer confirmed an Examiner.com report of an 8:30 p.m. fight outside SideBar, located in the Gaslamp district on 536 Market St. A Chargers spokesman said the team was aware of the report and working to confirm Mathews' reported role.
Sgt. Robin Rose directly refuted it, saying Mathews was not arrested. "We can say that he was definitely not arrested by SDPD," Rose said, "but there might have been a separate arrest that lead to that (report). … It was not Ryan Mathews."
Rose could not confirm whether Mathews was present at the fight. A man who is not Mathews was arrested in the altercation. That person's name cannot be released yet, she said.
If this is the end of the story, bummer for Mathews that this got out. It's not like he needed any further negative pub after his suspect 2012 season with 707 rushing yards and a 3.8 ypc average in 12 games which has recently led to a public discussion about whether the former first round pick is a three down option. In case you were wondering, should (or when) Mathews misses any game action, San Diego has Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown in reserve, Your excitement mileage for either of those veteran options may vary.
