A lot of the talk surrounding the Eagles has been about Nick Foles or Michael Vick , but rookie Matt Barkley doesn't want to be forgotten.
"There is an open competition," Barkley said Monday via CSN Philly's Reuben Frank. "I absolutely feel like I've got to be a part of it. I've got to challenge myself, just like any other guy on the team.
"Your mindset has to be that you're in the race to start," Barkley said. "You've got to have that mindset. I'm in a competition regardless of what everyone else is saying. You just have to practice that way, of always trying to compete.
"I couldn't care less about what people are talking about. I don't listen to that. ... I feel like I'm part of that race, whether people are saying that or not."
By the way, Foles said pretty much the same thing about himself today.
And Barkley is a part of this race. Frank believes Barkley has a shot, albeit a long one, to win the job because he is the only quarterback in the competition who was hand-picked by head coach Chip Kelly. We have no idea how this will all end up in five weeks, but if you've been following along, it sounds like the smarter bet is on the field rather than Vick to start in Week 1.
