There is already an expectation in one corner that Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart may be held out of training camp until near its end. But the team remains hopeful that Stewart will be able to practice with his teammates much sooner than that. We will find out Thursday when the Panthers open training camp.
"Thursday is when we'll get the definitive (answer)," head coach Ron Rivera said of Stewart's health. "Kind of hoping he's ready to go, or ready to go in a limited capacity, once we get there on Thursday."
Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer said Stewart will undergo an "extensive" physical.
It would be a surprise if Stewart is cleared to practice. He had surgery performed on both ankles during the offseason and missed all OTAs and minicamp. Stewart always seems to have something wrong with his feet. He is a low-end flex player right now, but he could have considerably more value if he can ever stay healthy.
