Report: Ravens TE Dennis Pitta done for the season with dislocated hip

The news is getting worse and worse on Dennis Pitta by the minute. Based on the latest update from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the clock has struck midnight for the Ravens tight end, who is reportedly out for the season after suffering a dislocated hip in Saturday's practice. Plugged in Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson tweeted out that no determination on Pitta's status has been made. However, the Baltimore Sun writer also added via a source, "it doesn't look good." Immediate reports after the injury had the pass catcher out for at least Baltimore's season opener against Denver on September 5.

Fantasy Analysis:

No Pitta roaming the middle of defenses is a major blow to the Ravens, who would be without their first and third most targeted receivers from last season's Super Bowl team (Yes, Anquan Boldin had the most passes thrown his way in 2012). Not that Baltimore fans want to hear, this but it would be an even bigger blow to fantasy players seeing as the TE position is already limited with options. Projections put Pitta among the top 6-7, perhaps even a touch better in PPR, but the rankings really fall off after him.

However, not all is last for the Ravens and the fantasy world. Former third-round pick Ed Dickson @EdDickson84 caught 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns in 2011. With Pitta taking a larger role last season, the 6-foot-4 target worked more as a pass blocker, finishing with 21 receptions in 13 games.

Ironically, veteran Visante Shiancoe visited the Ravens camp on Friday, leading to speculation he could be signed following Pitta's injury. Regardless, he's not of interest for fantasy thinkers.

Come draft day, Dickson won't look like a fantasy starter, but a TE2 candidate, for now. However, there could be more seeing as Baltimore already lacks a viable option opposite Torrey Smith, the one Ravens receiver worth owning. The speedy Deonte Thompson is generating buzz and Jacoby Jones will eventually return to action, but no doubt, the spot is unsettled.

That's probably not a far way to view the Ravens TE situation since Dickson has experience. It's just not looking as nice for fantasy players as it was starting the day.
