It doesn't seem to be that long ago when Jonathan Stewart actually held substantial fantasy value. The Panthers said they were going to be more committed to the run game, and with DeAngelo Williams likely headed out of town, Stewart's stock looked to be on the rise.
But Williams is staying in Carolina after restructuring his contract, and Stewart just can not get healthy at all. He has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list for all of training camp after having surgery performed on both ankles during the offseason. However, head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Stewart is "still on target" to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Stewart said a couple of weeks ago that his right ankle is still giving him problems.
I was all aboard the Stewart bandwagon back in May and June. I was drafting him in mocks as an RB4 and loving it, but I thought his recovery would have been further along by now. There's no sense as to when he will practice, and he may not practice at all this month. Still, Stewart is worth a late-round pick in deeper leagues if you draft a solid group of RBs. He's only 26 years old, and he will be an important cog in this running game ... if he can get healthy.
