Jeff Legwold, who was a Broncos reporter for the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News for nine years before taking his current job at ESPN, said last week that he expected the Broncos to employ a running-back-by-committee strategy this season with Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman at the top. Legwold added some emphasis to that opinion in a Tuesday article.
"Folks can wish it were different, especially as they wrestle with their fantasy lineups each week, but every indication on the practice field -- as in EVERY indication -- is that Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball are going to share the workload in a variety of down-and-distance situations," Legwold wrote. "And Knowshon Moreno and Jacob Hester figure to at least be in the third-down mix as well at times."
Legwold also said Tuesday that Ball remains second on the depth chart behind Hillman.
Ball is being drafted in the fifth round on average while Hillman is lasting into the 10th. I still expect Ball to leap over Hillman on the depth chart before the regular season, but for now, the draft gap between those two definitely needs to be shortened.
