Competition between Dolphins RBs Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas is 'wide open'

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald wrote Wednesday that the battle to be the Dolphins' starting running back is "wide open." It has been assumed all summer that Lamar Miller @millertime_6 will get the first cracks on Sept. 8, but his grip on the job has loosened due to preseason mistakes such as a fumble and a costly drop on third-and-2.
"Obviously, Lamar has to catch the ball on third-and-2 when you're wide open like that," head coach Joe Philbin said. "That's a play you have to make in that critical situation early in the ballgame. ... There are still plays to be made before the final decision."
As Miller falls, Daniel Thomas is getting more opportunities to run with the starters. The two backs have been splitting time with the first-team offense in recent 11-on-11 drills.

Fantasy Analysis:

I scoffed when offensive coordinator Mike Sherman hinted at a competition here, but this is for real. It may be difficult to understand because Miller is so much more talented, and Thomas is such a sluggish runner, but it's obvious that Miller, who has 51 career carries on his record, hasn't gained the coaching staff's trust. Odds are Miller rises to the top and separates himself. Until then, he is probably best drafted as a low-end RB2 or flex. Of course, that could make Miller a value pick if everything pans out like it should.

This has to be to motivate Miller. Can Miami really start Daniel Thomas? How does that make them a better team?

I don't see how it does, but it's the coaches' prerogative. In the end, I believe the cream will still rise to the top.

Daniel Thomas looks like the better back in pre season.
Hes hitting the holes better and running harder. Id rather
Take Thomas in the 12th round than Miller in the 5th.
