According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Patriots running back Shane Vereen broke a small bone in his wrist on the first play of Sunday's game against the Bills and needs wrist surgery. The surgery is scheduled for today, and Glazer adds that Vereen is expected to miss a "few weeks."
Well, I guess we know which running back is going to start for the Patriots this Thursday. This is really tough news for the Pats after Vereen gained more than 150 yards from scrimmage yesterday. And he apparently did it all with a broken bone in his wrist. But the team won't let him play through it.
Vereen saved the Patriots' running game after Stevan Ridley was benched for fumbling. I can't imagine that Bill Belichick would start LeGarrette Blount over Ridley this week, but it could be a committee situation. Ridley had nine carries in the game while Blount has seven. Whatever the case, the Patriots might have a lack of confidence in Ridley right now, which could mean a larger number of pass plays this week. I'm sure offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would be cool with that.
