As expected, the Patriots will be without wide receiver Danny Amendola , and tight ends Zach Sudfeld and Rob Gronkowski tonight versus the Jets. But the big news here is that the speculation that Amendola's groin injury might not force him to miss only this game but many more.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Thursday that Amendola could be out from anywhere between 2-6 weeks. This follows the projection of ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss, who wrote he wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Amendola before Week 4.
The Patriots' next game is in 10 days at home against the Buccaneers. The hope is Gronkowski will be available then, but it sounds like Amendola definitely won't be. This is what you get with him.
As such, the Patriots will move forward with this week's hot waiver-wire add, Julian Edelman , and Kenbrell Thompkins as their top two wideouts. Rookies Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce are active, but they will see fewer snaps. Michael Hoomanawanui, whose name I copy-and-pasted into this post, will start at tight end tonight, but he is also not work a look right now. Edelman is the WR I want in this situation right now, although I think he's more of a WR3. I think you will see the Patriots lean on Stevan Ridley tonight, no matter how error-prone he was Sunday. It's amazing how things can change in a few days between games in this league.
