The undefeated New England Patriots will be without All-Pro defensive lineman Vince Wilfork for the rest of the 2013 season due to a torn Achilles' tendon injury. Wilfork had a modest nine combined tackles through three games; however, his presence is most felt in occupying running lanes and disrupting the pocket. His backup is listed as 2013 undrafted free agent Joe Vellano.
The Pats will likely use some kind of rotation with multiple players to handle Wilfork's absense. The Pats are currently ranked 16th in total defense, 17th in pass defense and 13th in run defense. Opposing offenses should find it a bit easier to run up the middle and quarterbacks might be able to step into their throws more often. New England will desperately miss his jump and explosion coming off the line.
