You are probably well aware of Adrian Peterson 's latest injury concern, a foot sprain he picked up in Week 14. But Peterson's backup and popular fantasy pick-up for Week 15, Toby Gerhart, is also hurt and will miss some practice time.
Gerhart suffered a hamstring injury during his 41-yard, tackle-breaking touchdown rumble against the Vikings on Sunday. Head coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesday that he is a "little more optimistic" on Gerhart's chances to play Sunday versus the Eagles than Peterson's but added that neither player will try to practice until Friday.
The Vikings' third-string running back is Matt Asiata.
Peterson is no longer wearing a walking boot, but is he still not expected to play. Of course, Peterson has said he will play, but the Vikings are going to have to see a lot to risk their franchise player near the end of a bad season. We'll have an update on this story by Friday at the latest, but if Gerhart is also inactive, who is Matt Asiata? He was undrafted coming out of Utah in 2011. He's about 6 feet tall and weighs around 230 pounds. He can be used in the pass game -- he caught 32 passes in his final year with the Utes -- but he posted a 4.77 40-yard time at the combine. He has played nine games this season, his first regular-season action in any year as a pro, solely on special teams. He carried the ball 19 times for 67 yards during the most recent preseason. Asiata may end up as a starting NFL running back with an exploitable matchup this weekend, but would you start him with a spot in your league's championship on the line? I think he's a low-end flex/RB3 at best if Peterson and Gerhart can't go.
