Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson gave it a go Sunday versus the Giants after some morning reports that he might not play due to a knee injury. But he was clearly limited as he gained only 43 yards and didn't have a catch in the second half. Head coach Jim Schwartz said after the Lions' fifth loss in six games that Johnson is "beat up" and has been really hampered by an ankle injury as well as that knee problem. On Monday, Schwartz was asked if Johnson will be rested in Week 17, and he only said that he will "see how the week goes" before deciding his status.
The Lions face the Vikings on Sunday. Those are words that should cause Megatron owners to salivate, but Schwartz should do what's best for his star wideout and sideline him. There's no point in putting Johnson out there only so he can hobble around and try to rack up some more numbers in a meaningless game. I know his fantasy owners care about those numbers, but resting Johnson is the smart move.
