The Panthers got some good news after what looked to be an ugly scene when wide receiver Steve Smith suffered a non-contact injury to his left knee Sunday. An MRI on Monday revealed that Smith has a sprained PCL. Head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Smith won't play Sunday versus the Falcons, but he hopes to have his star wideout back for the start of the playoffs. Ted Ginn Jr. will start in Smith's spot in Week 17. The Panthers can clinch an NFC South title and a first-round bye if they beat Atlanta.
I always fear the worst with non-contact knee injuries, but it sounds like Smith may be out only a week or two. Ginn is a desperation WR3 in Week 17 against the Falcons' abysmal pass defense.
