ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss projects that the Patriots will hold running back Shane Vereen out of Sunday's game versus the Bills.
"[Vereen] was held out of last Sunday's win after leaving with a groin injury, and if this was the playoffs, he'd be ready to go," Reiss wrote Saturday. "But the possibility of the team holding him back as a precaution makes some sense from this viewpoint."
Vereen is officially listed as questionable to play.
If there is a positive spin to this story it's that Vereen was able to go through some practice each day this week. But his chances of playing are looking down. Considering that this game won't kick off until late in the afternoon, you probably need to explore other options if you are planning on playing Vereen.
I expect Stevan Ridley and LeGarrette Blount to split the work evenly out of the Patriots' backfield. But really, your guess is as good as mine as to how Bill Belichick will handle his running game. Even with a fantastic matchup in the regular-season finale, it's tough to endorse someone here as anything more than a very low-end flex.
