Those are the words of Titans beat reporter Jim Wyatt as he runs through the reasons why running back Chris Johnson won't be donning a Titans uniform in 2014. One of those reasons is that the team signed Shonn Greene to a three-year, $10 million contract prior to this season, and he would have received more carries if he hadn't missed five games due to injury. Wyatt expects that uptick to come next season with Johnson out of the fold. Johnson is owed $8 million for 2014.
It's common knowledge now that the Titans are going to be cutting CJ?K soon. Johnson's words may be expediting the process. But it would be the wrong move to give Greene a substantial amount of extra work just because he's the veteran and making a decent salary. Greene has been passable in the red zone, but he's a lumbering player who barely gets what's blocked and is close to a non-factor as a receiver. The Titans should be looking for a younger, cheaper version of Johnson to pair with Greene, who should get enough work to only make him a desperate flex option.
