Lions new head coach Jim Caldwell to 'work on Stafford's footwork'

Jim Caldwell, the Detroit Lions new head coach, has made it known that he expects better from his franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford @Staff_9, and he's going to do his part to help him improve. After watching every throw that Stafford made during the 2013 season, Caldwell said, "The great majority of poor throws—people look at the arm, and that's important obviously, but I think footwork is the key. ... We'll work on it with Matthew, and he will do them flawlessly,"

Stafford threw for 4,650 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions this season.

Fantasy Analysis:

Stafford's mechanics have been criticized and discussed, almost ad nauseam. If he has a head coach who thinks it's worthwhile to work on improving in this area, it can only be a good thing... right?

If Caldwell is going to make this a focus of his job, then Stafford should take his tutelage to heart. If he does, it should be good for the Lions and also increase his fantasy value in 2014 and beyond. If Stafford maintains his stance that he doesn't need to be tutored, then it will ultimately result in one of the two moving out of Detroit... either Stafford for "being uncoachable", or Caldwell for "wasting his time on something with no results".

Oh... and a QB with better mechanics? Calvin Johnson says, "yes please!!"
