UPDATE: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson will have groin surgery

Update: Anderson adds Peterson will actually undergo surgery today and is expected to need 4-6 weeks to recover.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few days ago, we were waiting to hear if Vikings running back Adrian Peterson @AdrianPeterson needed to undergo surgery on his groin. The meeting with his doctor has apparently gone down, and Peterson has been told that he does indeed need surgery. According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, Peterson will go under the knife "in the very near future."

Fantasy Analysis:

Peterson should still be ready for training camp if this is just a sports hernia-like injury. But I am kind of conflicted on what to think about him for 2014 drafts. On one hand, he has now taken on more than 2,000 carries in his career, and the injuries are starting to mount up -- groin surgery, foot sprain, hernia surgery after last season, the ACL/MCL tears in late 2011. He is one of the most physical runners in the league and leaves himself open to take a high number of punishing hits. He'll turn 29 in March, which is not a young age for a seven-year starting running back at the NFL level. Bunch all of these negatives together, and I think Peterson slots behind the younger, more versatile backs, such as Jamaal Charles, LeSean McCoy, and Matt Forte.
On the other hand, Peterson is not human. We know how well he rebounded after shredding his knee, and he just ran for 1,266 yards and 10 touchdowns despite missing two games and being hobbled for many others this season. A healthy Peterson is still the league's best running back. He is an easy top-four RB.
