When Jeff Fisher landed the Rams job he hired Gregg Williams as his defensive coordinator, but an indefinite "Bountygate" suspension put those plans on hold. Williams eventually returned to football in February as a defensive consultant for the Titans. Now, two years later, Jeff Fisher has signed the man he originally wanted for the job after firing coordinator Tim Walton earlier in the week.
It was reported that Fisher took over much of the defensive handling mid-way through the season, so it's not a surprise that Walton is out. The Rams finished 15th in total defense this year, and while that is just above average in the NFL, it ranks last in the NFC West.
Williams brings a certain creativity and malleability to the Rams defense. And anyone who listened to his famous "Kill the head" locker room recording, knows he has passion. The scheme he employs will not differ greatly from Fisher's overall ideology, but Williams can use players in creative ways and based on situations can line his men up in a 3-4 or 4-3. During the Superbowl XLIV victory over the Colts, Williams famously had a different scheme for the first half and the 3rd and 4th quarters of the game.
