According to ESPN.com, WR Julian Edelman has checked into the open market and decided that this Brady guy is pretty dang good. Edelman has agreed to return to New England and enjoy the pleasure of having a hall of fame quarterback throw him the ball some more.
Edelman was by far New England's leading receiver in 2013, with 105 catches, 1,053 yards and six touchdowns.
Former Carolina Panters WR Brandon LaFell also signed with the Patriots on Saturday. LaFell had 49 catches for 627 yards and five touchdowns for the Panthers in 2013.
Edelman had a breakout season in 2013. He was one of only five players to have over 100 receptions. He's not the deep threat that many of the other top wideouts in the league are, but he is effective. He has good chemistry with quarterback Tom Brady, and excels at working the middle of the field.
So, this bodes well for Edelman's fantasy production heading into 2014. However, with tight end, Rob Gronkowski hoping to be fully back in 2014, that will surely cut into Edelman's production. If Gronk stays healthy... and that's about as big an "if" as there is... Edelman won't put up the same numbers he did in 2013. In my opinion, he's a low-end WR2 in 2014.
LaFell is the interesting one of these two to me. He's a good NFL receiver, even if his fantasy value isn't there. He blocks as well as any receiver in the league and takes pride in helping get his teammates open. This makes it no surprise that the Patriots would be all over him as a piece to their puzzle. He'll never be a stud fantasy receiver, but playing in an offense that throws the ball a lot, with a QB who is accurate, it's very likely that his numbers spike to a point that he's a solid flex option in all formats.
