Maurice Jones-Drew might be synonymous with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the UCLA product was born in Oakland. Now, it looks like his NFL career will come to an end back in his hometown. Jones-Drew signed a three-year contract with the Raiders on Friday.
MJD, who turned 29 a few days ago, is coming off of back-to-back seasons that were disappointing for different reasons. His 2012 season ended early due to a debilitating foot injury. He missed only one game last season but averaged just 3.4 yards per carry on more than 250 totes. His five touchdowns were also his worst number over a full season.
Hello, backfield committee. Jones-Drew will team with Darren McFadden , and while I assume MJD will be the Week 1 starter, I don't think that title means a whole lot. He looked finished last year, and the numbers back that up. While this duo may look good on paper and excite casual NFL and Raiders fans, between MJD's tired legs and McFadden's inevitable injuries, I am not high on anyone in this picture. I'll let someone else pay for the name value and stress over how these two will split touches.
This addition blocks young RB Latavius Murray for the time being, but he's someone to watch if effects of injuries and long-term wear show up, which they most likely will.
