When Michael Vick signed with the Jets back in March, he said he feels like he can still be a starting quarterback in this league, and Jets coaches said Vick will definitely be given a shot to start through a competition with Geno Smith .
Maybe Vick's competitive juices aren't flowing yet as we are still months away from training camp, but he said Saturday that "Geno's the starting quarterback for that football team.
"Ultimately, our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be," Vick said. "Myself and [third-string quarterback Matt Simms] are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from year one to year two."
We know Vick doesn't want to sit on the bench all season, and the Jets weren't going to spend $5 million on a QB who would be out of the race to start by May. So, take all of this with a grain of salt. It's just Vick playing the role of good teammate, but he's not going to give up this quietly. If he is given a truly fair chance, I think Vick could be the Jets' Week 1 starter, although I assume the team would prefer to see the younger Smith take a big leap in his sophomore season and turn into a quarterback they can depend on for years to come.
