Even the most casual NFL fan could tell you that the Panthers needed help at wide receiver entering this draft after losing their top four wideouts from last year's team. They addressed that void with their first-round pick Thursday by drafting Florida State wideout Kelvin Benjamin 28th overall.
Benjamin should be able catch 7-8 touchdowns right away with his 6-foot-5, 240-pound body and long arms. But that might be his ceiling as a rookie, touchdown or bust. Benjamin is not a great route-runner, so it's going to be a while before we can call him a finished product. His flaws might keep other rookies from playing much, but the Panthers need him to play. This is a good start for the Panthers, who still have work to do at this position.
