OK, Earl Bennett. Your time in the spotlight is over. The Browns have another wide-receiver acquisition to announce. The team signed former Cowboys wideout Miles Austin on Thursday. He was released by Dallas in March.
The Cowboys left the door open for Austin to return, but the Browns scooped him up first as they continue their effort to cover themselves following a couple of injuries at the position and in the event of a long suspension for Josh Gordon .
I will say that I'd rather own Austin than Bennett if forced to choose. But that's a very, very low bar. Austin has stronger odds of staying on the final roster, but he turns 30 next month and a couple of recent seasons have been practically wasted by hamstring injuries. As Austin has shown, that type of injury has a high rate of reoccurrence and is just one in a handful of reasons I'd prefer to stay away from him. The likely presence of a rookie quarterback in a run-heavy offense doesn't help Austin's chances of having a rebound season.
