Chargers beat reporter Michael Gehlken thinks so. He was asked during a chat earlier this week who are his breakout players for 2014.
"Ladarius Green the first name on offense who comes to mind," Gehlken wrote.
Green is a 24-year-old athletic tight end in a huge frame -- 6-foot-6, 240 pounds. He caught 17 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns last year.
Green is gaining his share of buzz this offseason. It's easy to become giddy when thinking about what he can do if given a full-time role. But I can't predict that will come this season for Green. Antonio Gates is wearing down, but he is still around, and I assume he will still see the majority of targets among Chargers tight ends. Keenan Allen is the undisputed No. 1 receiver here. And Gehlken also wrote in the chat that he sees this Chargers team as built to run the football. "No reason for this to be a pass-heavy system, throwing the ball 60-plus percent of the time," he wrote.
First-year offensive coordinator Frank Reich will have the ultimate say on that issue. I'm not betting right now on Reich giving Green a substantially larger role in 2014.
