Martin will see fewer touches under new Bucs head coach Lovie Smith, the Tampa Tribune reports. Martin averaged 23 touches per game over the last two seasons under former head coach Greg Schiano, but that will not be the case going forward. However, Smith has said that Martin will remain the starter. RB Mike James, RB Bobby Rainey and rookie RB Charles Sims will battle for the number two RB spot.
This might actually be good news for Martin, given the huge workload of his first two seasons. In 2013 he showed signs of fatigue, seeing his average drop from 4.9 yards per carry his rookie year to just 3.9 yards per carry his sophomore season. The explosiveness of his 2012 performance simply wasn't there. Perhaps the lightened workload will help him stay fresh and energized throughout the year. Martin is currently ranked 13th among running backs by FFToolbox.com.
