The results are in from Kendall Hunter 's MRI, and they show the worst-case scenario. The 49ers confirmed Saturday that Hunter tore the ACL in his right knee during Friday's practice and will miss the entire season. Hunter was set to compete in camp to remain the team's direct backup behind Frank Gore.
Without Hunter around, everyone moves up a rung. Rookie Carlos Hyde is now clearly in the lead for the No. 2 job. Hunter's injury raises LaMichael James ' chances of making the final roster. Marcus Lattimore might have a shot at the backup gig, but he has to prove he is all the way back from a brutal 2012 knee injury.
Hyde was already the team's most popular secondary back in fantasy circles. He's an RB4 who could be a touchdown maven this season. He is the team's running back of the future and with Gore in his 30s, the Niners would be well-served to give Hyde a significant role right away if he can handle it.
