Bernard Pierce has been the best running back at Ravens camp, outplaying veteran RB Ray Rice , according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. The 24-year-old Pierce will get to start the season as the Ravens' top RB, with Rice out for two games with a suspension. If Pierce is able to run effectively during that stretch, he may work his way into the better half of a timeshare with Rice for the 2014 season.
This opinion has been whispered by analysts for several weeks, but this is a ringing endorsement from an ESPN writer. What we saw from Rice last year was not good. He's got a tremendous amount of mileage on his legs, and it appears his body is starting to fail him. Add in the fact that Pierce gets a free shot for the first two games of this season, and there's a very good case to be made that this is the year we see a changing of the guard in Baltimore. Pierce is ranked 35th among running backs by FFToolbox.com, while Rice is ranked 26th.
