There is a shroud of mist hovering over the starting quarterback position for the Ney York Jets. In the spring, Michael Vick made it known that it isn't necessarily an open quarterback competition. Vick has seen a lot of work in camp, and so has Geno Smith . This past week, though, Smith took 63 of 75 first-team repititions in practice. Rex Ryan, the coach of the New York Jets, was hesitant to name a starter for this Saturdays' preseason game. Ryan ultimately decided Smith would be the starter for the Jets' next preseason game according to ESPN New York.
In my own opinion, the Jets, specifically their head coach, love the media. Ryan constantly feeds the media with his antics and decisions. The decision between starting your young, developing quarterback over an injury-prone veteran is a simple one. The only fuel for the fire is Ryans' hesitation to name Smith as the starter for the Jets during the regular season. Smith has the ability, but on a Jets team with little offense potential, I would stay away from him for now.
