Bills rookie wideout Sammy Watkins, who had already missed one preseason game and a few days of practice due to a rib injury, suffered another injury to his ribs Thursday versus the Lions. The injury is reportedly in the same area of Watkins' previous rib injury, which he sustained on Aug. 16
Fantasy owners will hate (but probably not surprised) to hear that an errant throw from E.J. Manuel contributed to this injury. The pass was a yard or two ahead of Watkins and forced him to stretch out, leaving his body exposed for a forearm to the ribs. We'll have an update on the severity of his latest rib ailment when it becomes available.
The bigger-picture concern is that Manuel has been mediocre at the very best in August. Manuel ends the preseason with one touchdown, three turnovers and six sacks absorbed. He completed 61 percent of his passes, but a 6.3 yards-per-attempt average hurts the eyes. Watkins is still a decent WR3 in deeper leagues because of his raw talent, but weekly inconsistency should be expected with Manuel slinging it somewhere, everywhere.
