Despite an impressive preseason, which included three sacks in four games, rookie defensive end Michael Sam has been released by the Rams. Sam, a seventh-round pick in May, was attempting to make the roster as a situational pass rusher.
The Rams' defensive line is already one of the best in the NFC, so the odds of Sam breaking into the league with this group were long from the start. But he certainly showed enough in August to prove that he can be valuable piece to a franchise with a weaker defense. St. Louis will try to get Sam through waivers and place him on its practice squad, but I think some other team will claim him first. Sam is good enough to play in this league, and when he does play in an NFL regular-season game, he'll become the first openly gay player to do so.
