Golf Rankings for Hyundai Tournament of Champions
Are you ready for Fantasy Golf? Here we go with the first Tournament Rankings of 2014!
Adam Scott [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #7
...... Adam Scott 5/1 Scott has played Kapalua a total of five times since 2004. The winner of the 2013 Masters, as well as The Barclays, will take a six-week break after competing in next week's Sony Open at Honolulu. The less is more approach worked very well for Scott a year ago, who recently compiled two wins and a runner-up credit in Australia with a third at the World Cup of Golf in between. Owners in allocation formats should place a premium on the Australian when he opts to tee it up.
Matt Kuchar [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #27
Matt Kuchar 7/1 Kuchar has competed very well at Kapalua three of the last four years, placing inside the top 10 on each occasion. This will be his second start of the PGA Tour's new wraparound season following a T7 in November's McGladrey Classic. Since then Kuchar scored three top-fives in various non-Tour events. Kuchar earned his way into this tournament by winning last year's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship but claimed victory in a traditional stroke play tournament several months later at the Memorial.
Dustin Johnson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #8
Dustin Johnson 8/1 Johnson is the defending champion of this event and has played Kapalua four of the last five years. The Tournament of Champions was his only victory of 2013 but Johnson looked sharp late in the year after recovering from injury; capping the season with a solo fifth in the TOUR Championship. This will be D.J.'s first Tour start since winning the WGC-HSBC Champions, an event held in China this past November.
Webb Simpson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #87
Webb Simpson 10/1 Simpson has enjoyed the wraparound schedule so far. He opened with a victory in October's Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which got him into this event, followed by a T7 less than a month later in The McGladrey Classic. This year will be his third straight appearance at Kapalua after placing T11 last year and T3 in 2012.
Zach Johnson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #17
Zach Johnson 12/1 With half a dozen starts in this tournament, Johnson is the most experienced player in the field when it comes to competing at Kapalua. However, he's only managed one top-10 thus far while placing in the bottom half of the short field the five other appearances. Z.J.'s first title of 2013 came late in the season at the BMW Championship during a hot stretch featuring seven finishes inside the top 10 over eight starts. Johnson recently won the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge in a sudden-death playoff with tournament host Tiger Woods.
Jordan Spieth [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #2
Jordan Spieth 20/1 Last year's phenom won the John Deere Classic to earn the right to play this event for the first time. Spieth then added two runner-up performances and a T4 over his final five starts, all top-20 results. In late October he played the WGC-HSBC Champions to a solo 17th but should not be discounted despite his lack of experience at Kapalua.
Brandt Snedeker [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #16
Brandt Snedeker 15/1 Snedeker's solo third at Kapalua was his first appearance at the site since a top-10 back in 2008. He would go on to record two runner-up performances and a victory at Pebble Beach over his next four starts until his performance was derailed for a chunk of the season due to recurring issues with his ribs. Snedeker would get the issue resolved and won again at the RBC Canadian Open. He recently injured his knee falling off a Segway but still plans on playing this week.
Ryan Moore [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #46
Ryan Moore 20/1 Moore is making his second consecutive showing at Kapalua after winning the CIMB Classic in a playoff over Gary Woodland in late October. That performance followed a T9 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to start his wrap around schedule. Moore finished near the very bottom of the field in last year's Tournament of Champions but owns a T6 from 2010.
Harris English [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #74
Harris English 20/1 English is one of 13 first timers at Kapalua and among the best of them. He's remained busy with four starts to begin the wrap around campaign, highlighted by a T7 at CIMB Classic and a victory in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. English also won last year's FedEx St. Jude Classic although he did not hold up well during the FedExCup Playoffs.
Jason Dufner [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #66
Jason Dufner 20/1 Dufner managed a T18 in his Kapalua debut a year ago and earned his return trip by winning the PGA Championship. Despite an otherwise inconsistent season, a month earlier the Duff Man placed T4 at U.S. Open matching a Sunday-best round of 67. He would go on to score a pair of top-10s in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Chris Kirk [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #54
Chris Kirk 25/1 Perhaps Kirk enjoys the ocean. He finished T7 on 2012, his only Kapalua start and placed T5 in last year's Sony Open before a runner-up performance at Pebble Beach. Kirk finished T36 and T25 in a pair of October starts but won the The McGladrey Classic to get into the Tournament of Champions.
Martin Laird [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #194
Martin Laird 25/1 Laird last played Kapalua in 2012 and finished as the runner-up. His only other start at the site was another top-five from 2010. He struggled in his two October starts and was erratic throughout 2013. Laird won the Valero Texas Open in early April but missed three other cuts in a span of four events before a top-five at THE PLAYERS Championship. Laird's course history at Kapalua is limited, but strong.
